Uttara Phalguni (Uthiram): The Star of Promises
Uttara Phalguni nakshatra, Uthiram in Tamil: Aryaman and Surya, the star of promises, Panguni Uthiram weddings of the gods, and the Edayathumangalam temple.

In short
Uttara Phalguni, Uthiram in Tamil, is presided over by Aryaman, god of contracts and friendship, with Surya as its ruling planet.
Panguni Uthiram, the full moon on this star in Panguni, is kept as the wedding day of several divine couples.
The Mangalyeswarar temple at Edayathumangalam is traditionally associated with Uttara Phalguni nakshatra.
At a friend's wedding in New Jersey, in a rented hall with folding chairs and a very patient priest, there was a moment in the mantras when the priest paused to name Aryaman, the god of contracts and friendship. I had heard that name at every wedding of my life without noticing it. That evening I looked it up, and found that the same god presides over Uttara phalguni nakshatra, Uthiram in Tamil, the star of promises kept.
Uttara Phalguni nakshatra: Aryaman, the Sun and the bed's back legs
Uthiram's presiding god is Aryaman, one of the Adityas of the Vedas, the god of hospitality, friendship and the marriage bond. In Vedic weddings, the bride circles the fire and offers grain to Aryaman, asking to be released from her father's house and bound to her husband's. Its ruling planet, the adhipati in Jyotish terms, is Surya, the Sun. The star begins in Simha, the lion, and passes into Kanya, the maiden.
Its symbol is the back legs of a bed. The star before it, Purva Phalguni, the star of rest and delight, has the front legs. My wife pointed out that this is a very accurate picture of marriage: the first delight comes in front, and the steady support holds up the back for decades.
Tradition describes Uthiram-born people as reliable, generous, loyal, the friend who shows up with a car when yours breaks down. It is a description the tradition offers, not a destiny it demands.
Why do the gods marry on Panguni Uthiram?
Once a year, in the Tamil month of Panguni, the full moon falls on Uthiram. Panguni Uthiram is the great wedding day of the temple calendar. In temple tradition, Shiva and Parvati married on this day, Murugan and Deivanai married on this day, and Rama and Sita too, depending on whom you ask. Temples across Tamil Nadu hold kalyana utsavams, divine wedding festivals, and families bring their own newlyweds for blessings.
It is also the day Tamil weddings remember Andal. In the Nachiyar Tirumozhi, the girl-saint of Srivilliputhur describes a dream of her own wedding to Vishnu, in the decad of verses called Varanam Ayiram. It opens with a thousand elephants circling the town as the bridegroom arrives. Those verses are still sung at Tamil weddings, and my mother sang a few lines on our video call the week my cousin married. Anyone curious can read about the seven steps of the saptapadi, the vows that sit at the centre of the ceremony.
A wedding is the most public promise most of us make. Uthiram is the star that remembers it is also the most daily one.
A temple for marriage prayers
The widely shared Tamil star list gives Uthiram the Mangalyeswarar temple at Edayathumangalam, near Lalgudi. Mangalyam is the sacred thread of marriage, and the temple is visited by families praying for marriages, both those waiting for one and those hoping to mend one.
The monthly observance is modest. Because Surya rules the star, many Uthiram-born people light a lamp on Sundays; how Surya is worshipped explains the simple form. Those waiting for a match often keep Swayamvara Parvathi prayers. On the monthly Uthiram day, when the Moon returns to your birth star, light a lamp and quietly renew one promise. And when Uthiram comes back in your birth month, that star birthday is a good day to renew a vow, whether it is a marriage or a friendship.
The next star is Hasta, the star of skilled hands, which follows naturally: first the promise, then the work of keeping it.
One small thing to carry into this week
Keep one promise you made casually. The call you said you would make. The visit you said "we must" about. The book you borrowed. Nobody is keeping score, which is exactly why it matters. Aryaman is the god of the kept word, and most kept words are small ones.
Questions people ask
What is the significance of Panguni Uthiram?
Panguni Uthiram falls on the full moon when the Moon is in Uthiram during the Tamil month of Panguni, usually March or April. Temple tradition remembers it as the wedding day of Shiva and Parvati, Murugan and Deivanai, and Rama and Sita. Murugan temples draw large crowds, and many couples choose to pray for marriage and harmony that day.
Which temple is associated with Uthiram nakshatra?
The widely cited Tamil list of nakshatra temples names the Mangalyeswarar temple at Edayathumangalam, near Lalgudi in Tiruchirappalli district, as the Uthiram nakshatra temple. Its name refers to the mangalyam, the marriage thread, and it is visited for marriage blessings. Uthiram-born devotees often offer archana there on their star day or arrange one from afar.
What are Uttara Phalguni characteristics in Jyotish?
Tradition describes Uttara Phalguni-born people as dependable, generous, fond of friendship, good at keeping commitments and drawn to service and leadership. The symbol, the back legs of a bed, suggests steady support. These are tradition's descriptions attached to the star; the full birth chart and one's own choices shape character far more than any single star.
