According to legend, Goddess Kamakshi performed deep penance under a mango tree, worshipping a Shivalingam made of sand, and attained Lord Shiva’s hand in marriage.

Later, Adi Shankaracharya installed a sacred Sri Chakra in the temple’s sanctum, transforming the fierce form of worship into a more serene and benevolent one. This Sri Chakra became the seat of the renowned Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
