# Sankatahara Chaturthi: The Monthly Ganesha Fast

## In short

- Sankatahara Chaturthi is a monthly Ganesha fast on the fourth lunar day after the full moon, traditionally broken after moonrise.
- Devotees choose a full, fruit-only or single-meal fast, then offer an evening puja with durva grass and a sweet.
- Moonrise differs by city, so check a local panchangam.

Sankatahara Chaturthi is a monthly fast for Ganesha, kept on the fourth lunar day after the full moon and broken only when the moon rises that night. Try it once. Eat lightly or not at all through the day, do a short puja in the evening, and wait for the moon before you eat. You will notice something within a few hours: the day sharpens. Hunger has a way of clearing the mind of clutter, and waiting for the moon gives the whole day a shape, a point it is travelling towards.

## What is Sankatahara Chaturthi?

Every lunar month has two chaturthis, fourth days: one in the waxing fortnight and one in the waning. The waxing one, Vinayaka Chaturthi, is celebrated on a grand scale once a year as Ganesh Chaturthi. The waning one, after the full moon, is Sankatahara Chaturthi, also called Sankashti Chaturthi in Maharashtra and the North. Sankata means difficulty or distress; hara means the one who removes it.

So this is Ganesha's monthly day as the remover of obstacles. That fits his place in the tradition: he is worshipped before every beginning, and the reason is explored in why Ganesha comes first. Many people find it natural to keep this fast through a stretch of life that feels blocked: a job search, a move, a long wait. Families who have just moved into a new home abroad often take it up as part of [blessing that home](https://www.pariharaonline.com/blog/blessing-a-new-home-abroad).

When the chaturthi falls on a Tuesday it is called Angaraki Chaturthi, after Angaraka, the planet Mars, and it is considered especially powerful. Some people keep only the Angaraki fasts, a few times a year.

## How do you keep the Sankatahara Chaturthi fast?

The sankashti chaturthi vrat rules are flexible, and the tradition itself offers several levels. Choose the one your body can actually keep.

- **Full fast.** No food from sunrise until moonrise, water as needed. This is traditional but not required.
- **Fruit fast.** Fruit, milk and water through the day, no grains.
- **One meal.** A single simple meal at midday, then nothing until the evening puja.

In the evening, bathe or wash, light a lamp, and offer Ganesha what you can. Modaka, the sweet rice dumpling he is said to love, is traditional. A banana, a piece of jaggery or a few dates are perfectly fine. Many families offer 21 blades of durva grass, a small tender grass considered dear to Ganesha, tied in a little bundle. Some read the story of the day from the vrat katha; if you enjoy the way these little vrata stories work, what the Satyanarayan katha teaches looks at another one closely.

Then sit. Chant his name, or a simple mantra such as "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha", for a few minutes.

## Breaking the fast at moonrise

The fast ends when the moon rises. Step outside, or to a window, and offer water to the moon from a small vessel, with a prayer. Then eat, slowly, starting with the prasadam you offered.

Moonrise on a waning chaturthi is late, often well into the evening, and the Sankatahara Chaturthi moonrise time differs by city. It is later in some places than others and shifts through the year. Look up the time for where you live, not for your hometown. If cloud hides the moon, the tradition allows you to break the fast at the calculated moonrise time.

This is also where you must be kind to yourself. How to break the sankashti fast matters as much as keeping it: break it with something light, warm and easy to digest, not a heavy feast. If you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication, or doing physically demanding work, choose the fruit fast or one meal, or skip the fasting and keep only the puja. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure. Fasting is a way of paying attention to hunger, not a punishment for the body; what fasting teaches about focus goes deeper into that idea.

## Mark the next one

Open your calendar now and find the next Sankatahara Chaturthi; any panchangam will show it. Decide in advance which fast you will keep, so you are not negotiating with yourself at lunchtime. Put the evening puja in the diary like a meeting.

Then keep it once. See how the day feels when it is travelling towards the moon. If it helps, keep the next one too.

## Questions people ask

### What is Sankatahara Chaturthi and why is it observed?

Sankatahara Chaturthi, also called Sankashti Chaturthi, is observed every month on the fourth lunar day of the waning fortnight, after the full moon. Devotees fast and worship Ganesha, praying for the removal of difficulties, which is what sankata hara means. When it falls on a Tuesday it is called Angaraki Chaturthi and considered especially significant.

### What are the rules of the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat?

Traditionally devotees fast from sunrise until the moon is sighted, either completely, with fruit and milk, or with one simple meal. In the evening they worship Ganesha with durva grass, flowers and a sweet such as modaka. Anyone with health conditions, pregnancy or medication should choose a gentle version and consult a doctor.

### How do you break the Sankatahara Chaturthi fast?

After the evening puja, wait for moonrise. Offer water, milk or a little sandalwood-scented water towards the moon, say a short prayer, then eat the prasadam offered to Ganesha before a simple meal. If clouds hide the moon, most families break the fast at the published moonrise time for their location.

### Why is moonrise time important on Sankatahara Chaturthi?

The fast is traditionally completed only after sighting and honouring the moon, linked to a story in which Ganesha and the moon are reconciled. Because moonrise depends on location, it can differ by an hour or more between cities and countries. Devotees in the US should use a panchangam set to their own city.
