# Horoscope Matching (Porutham): The Ten Checks, Calmly

## In short

- Horoscope matching porutham compares a couple's birth stars on ten traditional checks, such as Dina, Gana, Yoni, Rajju and Vedhai.
- Families often give rajju and vedhai extra weight, but astrologers read the whole picture rather than a simple score.
- Porutham works best as a starting point for conversation, alongside what the two people actually feel and value.

When my cousin's marriage was being arranged, the family astrologer in Madurai studied the two charts for about ten minutes, made small marks in the margin, and then put down his pen and asked the question no chart could answer: "Do they like each other?" Everyone in the room laughed, a little nervously. That is horoscope matching porutham at its best. The ten traditional checks compare two people's birth stars, and a wise astrologer uses them to start a conversation, never to end one.

I have thought about that moment often since, especially as friends here in the US go through the same process on video calls with relatives in three time zones.

## What is horoscope matching porutham?

Porutham means agreement or compatibility. In Tamil tradition, it refers to a set of ten checks made mostly from the nakshatras, the birth stars, of the bride and groom. The ten poruthams run like this:

1. **Dina**, for health and day-to-day harmony
2. **Gana**, for temperament, grouping the stars as divine, human or fierce
3. **Mahendra**, for children and the growth of the family
4. **Stree Deergham**, for the wellbeing and long life of the wife
5. **Yoni**, for physical compatibility, each star paired with an animal
6. **Rasi**, comparing the two Moon signs
7. **Rasi Adhipathi**, comparing the planets that rule those signs
8. **Vasya**, for mutual attraction
9. **Rajju**, for the long life of the marriage itself
10. **Vedhai**, for obstacles and affliction between the two stars

North India uses a related system, Ashtakoota, which compares eight factors and scores them out of thirty-six points. The logic is similar; the arithmetic differs. If the difference between a birth star and a Moon sign is still unclear, rasi and nakshatra explains both in a few paragraphs.

## Which checks carry weight?

Many families treat rajju and vedhai as the most important. Rajju means rope; the twenty-seven stars are grouped under five parts of the body, foot, hip, navel, neck and head, and two stars in the same group are traditionally treated as a mismatch. Vedhai names pairs of stars considered to afflict each other.

What surprises many people is that seven out of ten is not a pass mark. The checks are not weighted equally, and astrologers also look at the full charts, at doshas such as Mangal dosha, and at the planetary periods each person is running. Traditional texts also recognise exceptions, circumstances in which a failed check is considered cancelled. This is why a match that looks weak on a printout can be read quite differently by someone who knows the whole picture.

My uncle in Madurai once described porutham to me as a weather report for a long journey. It tells you what to pack. It does not tell you whether to go.

## Holding porutham calmly

The Tirukkural, Thiruvalluvar's book of couplets, has a whole section on household life, the Illaraviyal. It says nothing about stars. It speaks of love, patience, hospitality and fairness. Kural 45 puts it simply:

*Anbum aranum udaiththaayin ilvaazhkkai*\
*panbum payanum adhu.*

If a home has love and virtue, that is both its nature and its reward.

That couplet is a good companion to any horoscope. The chart can point to places where two people may need more patience with each other. It cannot supply the patience. Tirukkural on love says more about this, and for anyone in a long search, waiting for the right match is kinder than most advice.

I have also seen families let a single failed check override everything they knew about two good people. That is the chart ending a conversation instead of starting one, and I do not think the old astrologers intended it.

## Before anyone says no

If you or your children are going through matching, a few practical points. Ask for the full reading, not just the score. Ask the astrologer to explain any weak check in plain words and whether traditional exceptions apply. Remember that in many families, especially abroad, the couple's own judgement now sits alongside the chart, not beneath it.

One small thing to carry into this week: if a match looks weak on paper, ask what it means in plain language before anyone says no. And then ask the astrologer's question from Madurai. Do they like each other?

## Questions people ask

### What is the 10 porutham list?

The ten poruthams used in Tamil tradition are Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergham, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedhai. Each compares the bride's and groom's birth stars or signs for a different aspect, such as health, temperament, children, the long life of the marriage or mutual attraction. Some regions use twelve checks, and North India uses the Ashtakoota system.

### What is the rajju porutham meaning in marriage matching?

Rajju means rope, and this check groups the twenty-seven stars under five parts of the body: foot, hip, navel, neck and head. If the bride's and groom's stars fall in the same group, traditional texts treat it as a mismatch, and many families see rajju as one of the most important checks. Astrologers also recognise exceptions, so ask for a full reading.

### How does marriage matching by nakshatra work?

The astrologer starts from the birth stars of both people and runs a set of comparisons: ten poruthams in much of South India, or eight kootas totalling 36 points in the North. Many also compare the full charts for doshas and planetary periods. The result is a picture of strengths and cautions, meant to inform the families' judgement, not replace it.
