# Ashwini Nakshatra: The Healers' Star and Its Temple

## In short

- Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras, presided over by the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine physician twins, with Ketu as its ruling planet.
- The Piravi Marundeeswarar temple at Thiruthuraipoondi in Tamil Nadu is traditionally associated with Ashwini nakshatra.
- Tradition links the star with healing and fresh starts; the simplest observance is a lamp and a prayer on your monthly star day.

The first star of the zodiac belongs to two horse-headed physicians who ride in at dawn, ahead of the sun. Ashwini nakshatra is ruled by these twins, the Ashwini Kumaras, and by Ketu, and tradition reads it as the star of quick beginnings and healing hands. The story of how the twins healed an old sage tells you most of what the tradition says about Ashwini.

## Who rules Ashwini nakshatra, and why a horse's head?

Jyotish, the Indian system of astrology, splits the Moon's monthly journey into twenty-seven nakshatras, stretches of sky often called lunar mansions, and hands each one to a guardian deity and to an adhipati, the planet that governs it. Ashwini's deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine twins of the Rig Veda, physicians to the gods. Its adhipati is Ketu, the shadow planet of detachment and sudden insight. The star opens Mesha, the first sign, the ram; Mesha rasi and its temperament pairs well with this piece.

The symbol is a horse's head. In the Vedic world horses meant speed and arrival: the first light racing over the horizon, the messenger who gets there before the news. The twins are said to come at dawn in a chariot, bringing relief before the day has properly begun.

So when tradition describes Ashwini-born people, it reaches for that picture: quick starters, restless when things move slowly, drawn to fixing what is broken, often with a healer's instinct whether or not they work in medicine. Read it as a description, not a destiny. Plenty of Ashwini people are slow and careful, and the star has no objection.

## The twins who made an old man young

The Mahabharata and the Shatapatha Brahmana both tell this story, with small differences. The sage Chyavana had sat in meditation so long that an anthill grew over him. The princess Sukanya, poking at two glowing points in the mound, blinded him by accident; they were his eyes. To make amends, her father gave her to the old sage in marriage, and she stayed with him faithfully.

One day the twins passed by and teased her. Why stay with an old man? Sukanya would not leave. Impressed, they offered a remedy. They led Chyavana into a pool, entered it with him, and all three came out identical: young and radiant. Sukanya was asked to choose her husband, and she found him anyway.

Chyavana was grateful. The gods had always refused the twins a share of soma, the sacred drink of the sacrifice, because physicians mixed with ordinary people and got their hands dirty. Chyavana insisted they be included, even facing down Indra to make it happen.

The story says an old man became young. The story is really about healing earning its place at the table. The gods looked down on the doctors for touching the sick, and it took a patient to say that those who heal deserve the sacred portion too.

## Where do Ashwini-born devotees go to pray?

The temple most nakshatra temple lists pair with Ashwini is the Piravi Marundeeswarar temple at Thiruthuraipoondi, in the Tamil delta. The name means the Lord who is medicine for birth itself: piravi is birth, marundhu is medicine. The deepest illness, in this reading, is being born again and again, and Shiva is the cure for that as well as for ordinary ailments.

Families with an Ashwini connection keep it simply. On the janma nakshatra, the birth-star day that returns roughly once a month, they light a lamp at home or ask for an archana, the offering of the deity's names with flowers. Dhanvantari, the physician form of Vishnu, is a natural companion for a healers' star; the tradition around Dhanvantari and healing belongs to the same family of stories.

When Ashwini recurs in the month of your birth, many South Indian families celebrate that day instead of the calendar date, with a temple visit, a pooja or a family meal. The custom is explained in the Ayushya Homam and the star birthday. Not sure of your star? ## Keeping the healers' star

The twins were not honoured for their looks or their speed. They were honoured because they went where people were hurting. So on your Ashwini day, do one small healing thing: call a relative who is unwell, carry a meal to a friend who has had a hard week, or book the doctor's appointment you have been putting off. That is the Ashwini way of keeping the star.

## Questions people ask

### Which temple is associated with Ashwini nakshatra?

The widely cited Tamil list of nakshatra temples names the Piravi Marundeeswarar temple at Thiruthuraipoondi, in Tiruvarur district, as the Ashwini nakshatra temple. The name means the Lord who is the medicine for birth, fitting a star ruled by divine physicians. Devotees often offer archana there on their star day, or arrange one from afar when travel is not possible.

### Who are the Ashwini Kumaras?

The Ashwini Kumaras are twin gods of the Rig Veda, physicians to the gods, pictured with horses' heads or riding a golden chariot at dawn. They rescue sailors, restore sight and heal the sick in many hymns. The best-known Ashwini Kumaras story tells how they gave youth back to the aged sage Chyavana and earned a share of soma.

### What are Aswini star characteristics according to tradition?

Traditional texts describe people born under Aswini, the Tamil spelling, as quick, eager to begin, independent and drawn to helping or healing others. Some add impatience as the shadow side. These are tradition's descriptions of a star's temperament, not predictions; a full chart and a person's own choices shape a life far more than one star.

### What pooja is good for Ashwini nakshatra?

Many families light a lamp and offer archana to Shiva on the monthly Ashwini star day, and some add prayers to Dhanvantari, the physician form of Vishnu, because of the star's healing theme. Ketu, the ruling planet, is traditionally honoured through Ganesha worship. Keep it simple and regular rather than elaborate and occasional.
